Jean-Pierre Lacroix the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations flew to the DRC capital Kinshasa to meet with President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi for discussions on the withdrawal of the UN peacekeeping mission.

According to the DRC Presidency, the two leaders held discussions on 3 main points, in particular the relations between the DRC and the United Nations Mission for the Stabilization of the DRC (Monusco), the security, socio-economic and humanitarian challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On the phasing out of MONUSCO peacekeepers, Jean-Pierre Lacroix proposed to the DRC government a gradual exit strategy depending on the situation on the ground.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, for his part, called for a one-year extension of MONUSCO's mandate, which expires in principle on December 20.

This proposal was formulated during the meeting of the Security Council on the Democratic Republic of Congo, organized this week.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix is expected to visit the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, these areas where armed groups are still rife and where insecurity continues to be in full swing.

MONUSCO was established by the United Nations Security Council in resolutions 1279 (1999) and 1291 (2000) of the United Nations Security Council to monitor the peace process of the Second Congo War, though much of its focus subsequently turned to the Ituri conflict, the Kivu conflict and the Congo conflict.
