Rwandans will join their counterparts from other countries across the globe to celebrate the World Toilet Day (WTD) on Thursday, 10th December.
More than 673 million people around the world have no access to a toilet and have no alternative but to defecate outside due to lack of access to a toilet.
This year's celebrations are being held under the theme; 'Sustainable Sanitation and Climate Change'.
At national level, celebrations in Rwanda will be held in Bugesera district at Groupe Scolaire Kibungo (GS Kibingo) a combined primary and secondary school, in Bugesera District, Ntarama sector, Kibungo cell, in Ruhengeri village.
According to organisers of the celebrations, WaterAid Rwanda in partnership with Ministry of Health and Bugesera District, these celebrations will include dissemination behaviour change messages on improved hygiene, through use and access to decent toilets.
During the celebrations, participants will have an opportunity to see a combined Toilet and Water harvesting facility.
Groupe Scolaire Kibungo -the school which will host the event is composed of 28 teachers and 1,963 students (1,021 boys and 942 girls). Â It is supported by WaterAid Rwanda which built an underground rain water harvesting Tank, Menstrual Hygiene Management room and School latrine.
WaterAid Rwanda also has other wash activities which contribute to water, hygiene and sanitation in the neighboring community of Musenyi.
Organisers say they will use this opportunity to raise awareness of people living without access to safely managed sanitation. It is about acting to tackle the global sanitation crisis and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2024 as national target.
They are also looking at conveying messages such as informing participants that poor sanitation is linked to the transmission of deadly, preventable illnesses, such as cholera, diarrhea and dysentery.
They will also sensitize the participants that good hygiene practices including hand washing should be an essential part of everyone's lives: accessing education, accessing health care, other parts of our daily lives -public transportation, market places, etc.
It should also be noted that less than half of the world's population can rely on a toilet that is connected to a system that safely manages and disposes of human waste.
Meanwhile, as part of the schools re-opening under the Covid-19 guidelines especially ensuring strict hygiene, WaterAid Rwanda is supporting the Shishoza campaign in partnership with Ministry of Education and various districts with the aim of ensuring that schools and neighbouring communities are empowered in prevention and fighting against Covid-19.
Under this arrangement WaterAid Rwanda is supporting 50 schools across districts of Rubavu, Rwamagana, Bugesera, Nyagatare and Nyamagabe with non-medical supplies and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials.
