World Music Day: A celebration of Rwandan women in the industry #rwanda #RwOT

Every June 21, the global music community observes the World Music Day, an annual music celebration during which citizens and residents are urged to play music outside in their neighborhoods or in public spaces and parks.

On this special occasion, Volcano Fest and Indugu Studios held a Kigali edition dedicated to celebrating resilient Rwandan women in the music industry.

Various creatives gathered at Tugende café, Kimihurura, for the event which was primarily aimed at promoting, inspiring and connecting established and emerging female musicians.

Ingoma Nshya and Ikirezi cultural troupes as well as DJs Binghi and Itsdmnyt showcased wonderful performances to make the occasion worthwhile for the audience.

 

Pioneers of female drummers in Rwanda, Ingoma Nshya, were the first to hit the stage and they never disappointed as their energetic and passion drumming performance left audience entertained.

Drumming is in most cases performed by men and these women defied the odds with an outstanding performance that included dancing and jumping high. In a performance that lasted for over an hour, talented women from the troupe showcased various styles of drumming and dancing cheerfully to the excitement of revelers.

Odile Gakire Katese, the founder of Ingoma Nshya, explained that the initiative creates space for women and inclusivity in the drumming arena where there is gender equality.

Ingoma Nshya comprises over 500 women who, under the initiative operating in Huye district, take drumming lessons, dancing and creating songs that celebrate women.

 

Next up on stage was Ikizere Troupe, a women-led group showcasing Rwanda's most ancient, profoundly influential and unique music expressions. Their performance showcased traditional dance from young women who were dressed in the traditional attire ( Umushanana). The singers also used traditional music instruments captivating the audience with a sense of pure traditional music.

Then female Deejays Binghi and Itsdmnyt brought up energetic beats and vibes to the dance floor with some of the mixes from their decks.

Attendees also had time to network and have a good time while the deejays were doing what they do best.
